Tuition is held at my home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. On a tuition day you will be part of a small group of no more than 4 people. If you would like to book a private tuition day for just your friends or partner, or come to me for one-to-one tuition then click here.
I started tuition because I know the pleasure that comes of making a really big piece of art for your own home. If you’re worried about joining a tuition day because you don’t consider yourself ‘good at art’, then please don’t be. My students come from far and wide and have a variety of experience with art – but most are people with ‘ordinary jobs’ who haven’t painted since childhood and who just love the idea of spending a day doing something entirely creative and fun.
We begin our day at 10am with coffee and a chat and then experiment with colours and brush technique on card, before moving onto your big canvases. I enjoy cooking for my students and we break for lunch around 1:30pm and assess how you’re feeling about your painting so far. Before lunch I’m there to guide you, but I like to let my students feel their own way at first, getting used to the materials. After lunch I will help as much as you want me to – I can advise or I can paint with you, it’s up to you. What is really important to me is that my students leave with a painting they love.
We finish up around 3:30pm. Your painting will be dry enough to take away with you and I’ll give you fastenings and picture string so you can hang your work.
Please note that your canvas is not included in the price of tuition and you will need to bring one with you. Take a look at my Tuition Student Information page for ideas about canvases – I will provide paint and brushes. Please see FAQs for further questions or feel free to contact me on here or instagram.
A: No, absolutely not. Many of my students haven’t picked up a paintbrush since school. It’s my job to teach you and make sure you are happy with your painting.
A: There will be a maximum of 4 students on any one day. We are painting in my home and limiting it to 4 ensures we have enough space and I can give individual attention to each student.
A: Yes, if you would like my full attention I offer 1:1 tuition. You can also book private tuition for just you and a friend or a group of friends. For prices see my booking page.
A: I take a maximum of 4 students for a tuition day. If you’d like to paint with more friends, then a Sky Painting Party could be right for you. Click here for details.
A: Most students consider their paintings finished by the end of the day. If you haven’t finished my aim is that you will leave with the confidence and knowledge to continue with your painting at home. And yes, your work will be dry enough to transport home; acrylics dry very quickly.
A: You have choices, depending on the size of canvas you choose. We can package it up together at the end of the session to carry as over-sized baggage on the aeroplane; we could take it off the stretcher bars and roll it for easier transportation; we can arrange for a courier to get it home for you. Please chat to me for further details.
A: You will need to bring the canvas you are going to paint on, unless you have arranged to get it delivered to my house beforehand. As acrylics don’t wash out of clothes, you might also want to bring an apron, although I have some you can borrow. I will provide all other equipment and lunch.
A: We begin at 10am, break for lunch around 1pm and finish up around 3:30pm.
A: No problem; I am happy to cater to dietary requirements – just please make sure you have given me notice ahead of the day.
